Neroli Essential Oil
Neroli is an essential oil from the bitter orange tree. We get Petitgrain from the stems and leaves. You can get Bitter Orange oil from the orange skin. And now we get Neroli essential oil from the flowers! It’s a pretty handy tree to have, I think! The flowers are very sensitive – the blossoms have to be picked and then very quickly distilled before they lose their essential oil!
Traditionally, Neroli flowers were used in wedding ceremonies and for the wedding night. Neroli is known for easing feelings of apprehension and calming the nerves. Many times flowers were place in a bride’s headdress and then also placed all over the marriage bed to ease feelings of tension and anxiousness.
Neroli essential oils smells like a sweet floral, it’s a fresh and citrusy oil. It’s main chemical components are Linalool and linalyl acetate – similar to Lavender essential oil. It also has limonene like citrus oil as you might expect since the oil is sources from an orange tree. It’s important to note that Neroli is NOT a photosensitive oil.
Before we move on I think it’s important that I talk a little bit about purity. Not all essential oil are created equally. I would never go to my local grocery or health store and pick up a random bottle labeled “100% pure” and trust it. There’s hardly any regulation in the industry so WE as consumers have to shop responsibly. After a lot of research I fell on doTERRA and their Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Oils. I believe they have the highest standards for essential oil purity and potency on the market – they even post their test results publicly for the world to see. They lead the way in every aspect of the industry. Plus they cut out the middle man, give fair wages, support local communities through the Healing Hands Foundation, and more. I only endorse doTERRA Essential Oils.
Research
If you are an essential oil addict like me and obsess over the oils, you’ve probably made your way to amazing sites like Pubmed. If not, you’ll start today.
The chemical constituents Linalool and Linalyl Acetate were looked at in a study, check out the findings:
“The results obtained indicate that linalool and the corresponding acetate play a major role in the anti-inflammatory activity displayed by the essential oils containing them, and provide further evidence suggesting that linalool and linalyl acetate-producing species are potentially anti-inflammatory agents.” (1)
If that’s not enough to make your think they work, here’s another bit of research that talks about the effect theses constituents have on pain and inflammation.
Moving on, another study examined the difference in stress between three groups exposed to different things: real essential oils, synthetic fragrances, and nothing (control). The results were significant! I’ll post a roller bottle and diffuser recipe with the oils they used in this study.

Yes, thank you for your article. I have a question for you. This months promotion of buying the convention kit….. Are the 3 bottles of Neroli, Jasmine and Rose oil in the 10 ml bottles pure essential oils or are they diluted with fco? Thanks, can’t seem to find that info on the doTerra site within the oils information.

Hey Kathleen! Thanks for the comment. All three of those oils are prediluted with FCO. They’ve done this for ease of use but also to reduce the prices to an affordable rate. Just a 5 mL bottle of Rose or Jasmine can easily cost more than $200+. The Touch costs for these oils are a price that anyone could afford.
