If you’ve been a part of the crunchy or natural health world for a little while, you’ve probably heard of Kombucha. It’s the next big thing to drink and a great alternative to soda! Kombucha has a lot of health benefits – just do a quick google search and you’ll find a slew of websites proclaiming it’s almighty power. Me – I just want to finally kick my habit for pop without giving up a bubbly drink.
Now, if you’ve done that google search, you’ve probably found a bunch of crazy long tutorials of how to make your own SCOBY and kombucha. It can get frustratingly overwhelming.
So here’s my easy to understand tutorial!!
Make Your Own SCOBY Using a Store-Bought Kombucha
Now before you can make kombucha you have to have a SCOBY. It’s the mother of the kombucha. You can adopt one from a friend or order a dehydrated one from Amazon. But I like to make my own if I don’t have a friend that can spare one. The one’s from Amazon are too costly compared to the one I make here. Plus from what I’ve heard – they take about as long or longer to rehydrate as it takes to make one of your own.
What you’ll need:
Place your two tea bags and sugar in your medium size glass bowl.
Boil water. Pour 2 cups of boiling water into your glass bowl. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Steep tea bags for 10 minutes.
Remove the tea bags. Stir in the entire bottle of organic and raw Kombucha.
Cut your string to the appropriate size so that it wrap around your medium bowl.
Place the towel over the mixture and tie down with your string.
Place your bowl in a cupboard and forget about it for two weeks! I put mine in the cabinet above the fridge. It needs to be a warm, dark place.
Now go mark your calendar! No peeking! In two weeks, we’ll take this SCOBY and turn it into Kombucha!!
