Okay, so if I didn’t sound crunchy before in previous posts, I definitely sound crunchy now. Did I just make my own deodorant? Yup, I did. And it wasn’t as hard to do as I thought it was going to be. I have used Tom’s brand and the doTERRA brand. Both are fine – but the Tom’s isn’t as clean as I’d like it to be and the doTERRA one just isn’t a fit for me. Some of my friends swore by this recipe so I decided to give it a try – and I’ve very pleased with the results! Here’s my all-natural homemade deodorant recipe!
All-Natural Homemade Deodorant Recipe
Ingredients
Yields 6-8 full size deodorants
- 1 cup raw coconut oil
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 1 cup baking soda
- 3 TBSP beeswax pellets (This stuff is super cheap and lasts FOREVER)
- 20-30 drops Frankincense Essential Oil
- 20-30 Drops Lemon Essential Oil
- 20-30 Drops Lavender Essential Oil
- Empty Deodorant containers (I got mine from Got Oil Supplies)
Directions
- Fill a medium pot with a couple of inches of water. Place a glass bowl in the water. Add the coconut oil, cornstarch, baking soda, and beeswax to the glass bowl.
- Bring the water to a boil – I started with it on medium heat and then brought it down to low heat.
- As the water begins to boil, start to occasionally stir the mixture in the bowl. You can see in the picture below the progression of the ingredients melting. It’ll pretty quickly transition from the first picture to the second, and then it takes awhile for the beeswax to completely melt. Just be patient. I think it took about 10 minutes for my beeswax pellets to melt.
4. Have your deodorant containers ready. I place mine on a paper towel for easy clean up. Check which kind of container you have. You can see that my large containers have to be filled from the bottom. And my sample-size deodorants have to be filled from the top. If you can see all the way through, then put the cap on the container and flip it over and fill from the bottom. If you can’t see through, fill from the top.
Note: Make sure that the push-pop mechanism (seriously, I have no idea what else to call it. Ha! Can you tell I’m a 90s kid?) is all the way down.
5. I used 5 drops of each essential oil in each. It’s very easy to add in the oil to the one that fill from the top – like my small containers. I fill them up, add the oils, and then stir them in with a toothpick.
It’s a little trickier to do the large one since they have to be made upside down and there’s no space to stir. My best solution for this was to add a little bit of the mix to the container, add 2 drops each of the oil, fill up the container halfway, and then I gently move the container in a circular motion to stir it in. Add 2-3 more drops of each, and fill the rest with the mixture, and then gentle try to mix it again.
If you come up with something better let me know! I guess I could have let the mixture cool a little bit and then stir all the oil in, and then fill the containers. Live and learn right??
6. I placed my filled containers in the freezer to cool quickly. And then I pulled them out. Once they got back to room temperature they are easy to open.
Does it Work?
Well, I haven’t been using this recipe for long, buuuuut I think it’s a winner. We’ve been having heat advisories every day PLUS it got me through Barre class this morning with no problem!
It’s a nice clean smell. This is a good recipe for men or women.
Clean up Tip!
Clean up immediately after you are done making the deodorant. Beeswax isn’t very easy to clean up – it has to be very hot. So wipe everything down while it’s all still hot and melted, I like to use paper towels because it’s such a pain to clean. Paper towels make it really easy.
